Abstract

Abstract. Outdoor workers frequently develop pterygium due to their daily exposure to sunlight and dust, which can lead to repeated drying of the conjunctiva or cornea and microtrauma, particularly in tropical regions. The prevalence of pterygium in Indonesia is 8.3%, and in North Maluku it is 14.3%. Guaeria Village is a fishing village in the Jailolo District, West Halmahera Regency. This village is located on the same land as Halmahera Island with limited access. The majority of the residents work as sea transportation service providers and fishermen. This service aims to enhance awareness about pterygium by utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) and promoting early detection of the condition. The service method involved counseling the coastal community and then conducting general and eye physical examinations. The community responded enthusiastically to this activity, resulting in a request to conduct it over two days. The largest proportion of participants were aged 45-59 years, totaling 12 people (30%), and the highest incidence of pterygium in the mild category (grade 1-2) was 26 people (65%), most of whom were in the 45-59 age group. The conclusion of this exercise show a high frequency of pterygium; so, similar activities must be carried out regularly and sustainably, particularly in island regions with inadequate healthcare services.
